Things to Do in Freehold, NJ: A Local Guide

Freehold is the county seat of Monmouth County and one of the most historic towns in New Jersey. Whether you live here or are visiting family, there is plenty to see.

Monmouth Battlefield State Park

On June 28, 1778, George Washington’s army met the British at the Battle of Monmouth — one of the largest battles of the American Revolution. Today the battlefield is a state park with walking trails, open farmland and a visitor center, and it hosts living-history events that bring the battle to life.

Historic sites around the battle

  • Old Tennent Church — served as a field hospital after the battle; the churchyard is a peaceful stop for history lovers
  • Covenhoven House — headquarters of British General Sir Henry Clinton before the battle
  • Historic Walnford — an 18th-century house and working grist mill in nearby Upper Freehold
